Peter Nicolai Arbo

Peter Nicolai Arbo painted Norse myth and Norwegian history. Valkyries, Odin’s wild hunt and saga battles appear in his canvases, full of movement and drama.
He was born in Drammen, studied in Copenhagen and then at the Düsseldorf Academy. He lived in Paris in the 1860s and later in Oslo, where he headed the art society. His best known work, Åsgårdsreien (The Wild Hunt of Odin), shows riders storming across the sky. His works are in the National Museum in Oslo.
Åsgårdsreien and Battle of Stamford Bridge show his subjects. Look at the sweep of the figures.
