Sisto Badalocchio

Sisto Badalocchio was a Baroque painter from Parma trained by the Carracci family. His religious pictures have the warm colour and soft modelling of the Bolognese school, with figures that recall Correggio.
Born in Parma, he studied with Agostino Carracci in Bologna and then worked under Annibale Carracci in Rome until 1609. With Giovanni Lanfranco he etched a set of prints after Raphael’s Bible scenes in the Vatican. Back in the Emilia region he painted the dome of San Giovanni Evangelista in Reggio Emilia.
His Christ Carried to the Tomb is in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. Look at the gentle light and the soft, rounded forms that show the influence of Correggio.
