Theodor Aman

Theodor Aman is one of the founders of modern Romanian painting. He painted scenes from Romanian history, portraits, lively peasant scenes like dancing children, and in later years small still lifes and intimate interiors, all with a bright, clean palette.

He was born in Câmpulung-Muscel in Wallachia and studied in Bucharest before moving to Paris in 1850, where he trained with Michel Martin Drolling and François-Édouard Picot and was influenced by the Barbizon painters. Back in Romania, he and Gheorghe Tattarescu persuaded Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza to found the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest in 1864, and Aman was its director until his death. His house and studio in Bucharest are now the Theodor Aman Museum.

Copii Jucând Hora (Children Dancing the Hora) and Flowers in Vase show his range.
