William Henry Holmes

William Henry Holmes was a painter and a scientist at the same time. He is best known for his panoramic drawings of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone, made for government surveys, and he also painted watercolours and oils of landscapes and daily life.

Born in Harrison County, Ohio, he went to Washington to study art and was soon working as a scientific illustrator at the Smithsonian Institution. He joined the survey expeditions to Yellowstone, later became a leading archaeologist and anthropologist, and headed the Bureau of American Ethnology. From 1920 he directed the Smithsonian’s national art collection. Mount Holmes in Yellowstone is named after him.

His paintings, such as A Mexican Laundry and A Gypsy Camp, have the clear, observant eye of someone trained to record exactly what was in front of him.
