William Trost Richards

William Trost Richards painted landscapes and seascapes with extraordinary detail. His early work records every leaf and stone, while his later coastal scenes capture breaking waves, rocky shores and sunlit surf with great truth to nature.

Born in Philadelphia, he studied with Paul Weber and was strongly influenced by the writings of John Ruskin, becoming a leader of the American Pre-Raphaelites. He is also linked with the Hudson River School. From the 1870s he concentrated on the sea, painting the coasts of New Jersey, Rhode Island and Cornwall. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum, the National Gallery of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

A Rocky Coast and Breakers at Beaver show his patient study of moving water.
