The painting
Allegory of Inclination
Artemisia painted this for a ceiling in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, around 1615 to 1616: a young woman on a cloud holding a compass, representing natural talent. The face may be her own. The original was nude; a later owner had drapery painted over her. It is still in the Casa Buonarroti. We paint each copy by hand in oil, only after it is ordered, and send you a photo to approve first.

The hand behind it
Artemisia Gentileschi
Artemisia Gentileschi painted strong women from the Bible and history, Judith, Susanna, Bathsheba, Cleopatra, as active, determined figures rather than decorative ones. Her style follows Caravaggio: dramatic light from one side, deep shadow and real, weighty bodies. She was born in Rome in 1593 and trained in the workshop of her father, Orazio Gentileschi. She was the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, worked for the Medici and later ran a studio in Naples, with clients across Europe. Her Judith Slaying Holofernes is in the Uffizi in Florence, and her Self Portrait as the Allegory of Painting is in the Royal Collection. She died in Naples around 1654. Bathsheba and her Cleopatra pictures show her rich fabrics and strongly lit skin tones.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Allegory of Inclination in a different size or shape?
Yes. Allegory of Inclination is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 152 x 61 cm (59.8 x 24 in).
