The painting
American Gothic
A bald farmer in overalls and a suit jacket holds an upright three-pronged pitchfork beside a woman in a colonial-print apron, with a white Carpenter Gothic house behind them. Those prongs come back in the stitching of his overalls, in the pointed-arch window and even in the structure of his face. Wood's sister Nan posed for the woman and the family dentist, Byron McKeeby, for the man. Nan sewed the apron herself, using rickrack trim taken from their mother's old dresses.American Gothic is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of Grant Wood's work. The hand behind it
Grant Wood
Grant Wood painted American Gothic in 1930 and spent the rest of his life attached to it. The couple in front of the Carpenter Gothic farmhouse were his sister Nan and his dentist, and Iowans complained at the time that he had made them look grim. He studied in Munich, where fifteenth century Northern painting, Van Eyck and Memling especially, gave him the hard clean surfaces and precise detail he used afterwards. That European training sits oddly under the regionalist politics his work got attached to. The landscapes are stranger than the famous picture suggests. Rolling Iowa hills rendered as smooth green mounds, trees like lollipops, everything tidied into pattern. He taught at the University of Iowa and died at fifty on the eve of his fifty first birthday.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get American Gothic in a different size or shape?
Yes. American Gothic is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 78 x 65.3 cm (30.7 x 25.7 in).
