The painting
At Eternity’s Gate
His fists pressed into his face, an old man sits hunched on a chair beside the fire. The pose goes back to 1882, when Van Gogh drew Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland, a pensioner and war veteran at an almshouse in The Hague, and made a lithograph from the drawing. One print of that lithograph is annotated with the English title the painting carries now. He repainted the figure in oil at Saint-Rémy, while recovering from a severe relapse of his illness, about two months before his death.Van Gogh painted this in May 1890 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, a few months before his death. An old man in a blue suit sits on a chair by the fire, bent forward, his fists pressed into his eyes. Van Gogh based it on a drawing and lithograph he had made in The Hague in 1882, of an old pensioner. The original, 81.8 x 65.5 cm, is in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. We paint each copy by hand in oil, only after it is ordered, and send you a photo to approve first.

The hand behind it
Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh came to painting late and worked at it for barely a decade. Before that he sold prints for a Paris art dealer, taught briefly in England, and spent a miserable stretch as a lay preacher among Belgian coal miners, sleeping on straw and giving away his clothes. He was twenty-seven when he decided to draw for a living. The early Dutch work is dark and heavy, all peat browns and lamp-black. The Potato Eaters, finished in Nuenen in 1885, is the high point of that phase and looks almost nothing like what came after. Two years in Paris with his brother Theo changed the palette completely. He saw Impressionist canvases and Japanese prints, and the mud lifted. Arles is where the paintings most people picture were made: the sunflowers, the yellow house, the wheatfields under a sky that will not sit still. Then Saint-Rémy, then Auvers, then nothing. He was thirty-seven. Roughly 860 oil paintings survive. The ones most people know were made in his last two and a half years. He sold almost none of them.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get At Eternity’s Gate in a different size or shape?
