Benois Madonna
In a dark room, a young Mary seems to laugh as she plays with the plump Child on her lap, who grasps the sprig of flowers she holds, a sprig shaped like a cross. A double-arched window in that dark interior gives a glimpse of pale blue sky. This is probably the first picture Leonardo painted on his own, apart from his master Verrocchio. Raphael copied it in his Madonna of the Pinks, and the Hermitage bought it from the Benois family in 1914.Leonardo da Vinci was in his twenties, still working in Florence, when he painted this Madonna around 1478 to 1480. Mary is young and laughing, and the Christ Child takes her hand to study a small four-petalled flower, often read as a hint of the Cross. The window behind them shows nothing but pale light. The painting is named after the Benois family, who sold it to the Hermitage in St Petersburg in 1914. The original is small, 49.5 x 33 cm.Ours is painted by hand in oil once you order, in the size you choose, and you approve a photo of it before it ships.

The hand behind it
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo finished very little. That is the first thing to understand about him. A few dozen paintings survive, several unfinished, against thousands of pages of notebooks filled with anatomy, water, flight, gearing and the occasional shopping list. What he did finish changed how paint could describe a face. Sfumato, the smoky transition between tones with no visible edge, is why the Mona Lisa’s expression refuses to settle. He built it up in translucent layers so thin that analysis still struggles to count them. The Last Supper was an experiment that failed technically, painted in tempera on dry plaster rather than true fresco, and it began deteriorating within his lifetime. He worked for the Sforza in Milan, for Cesare Borgia as a military engineer, and ended his life in France under François I. The anatomical drawings, made from dissections he performed himself, were centuries ahead of anything published.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Benois Madonna in a different size or shape?
Yes. Benois Madonna is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 49.5 x 33 cm (19.5 x 13 in).
