The painting
Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa
Gros painted this in 1804 to celebrate Napoleon's visit to the plague hospital at Jaffa in 1799. Under Moorish arches, Bonaparte reaches out to touch the sore of a sick soldier, while an officer behind him covers his nose. It was a piece of propaganda, painted on a huge scale. It is in the Louvre.Painted to order, by hand, in oil on canvas. A photo of your painting comes to you for approval before shipping.

The hand behind it
Antoine-Jean Gros
Antoine-Jean Gros painted Napoleon’s campaigns with colour, movement and emotion that went well beyond the cool Neoclassical style he was trained in. His battle scenes and portraits helped build the Napoleonic legend and opened the way for French Romanticism. He was born in Paris in 1771 and studied with Jacques-Louis David. His Bonaparte at the Pont d’Arcole (1796) was his first great success, followed by Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa (1804) and Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau (1808), all in the Louvre or Versailles. He was made a baron in 1824 and taught at the École des Beaux-Arts. He died in 1835. His portraits, such as Christine Boyer, show a quieter, more intimate side.

How is the finish priced?

How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
