The painting
Haller Madonna
Dürer painted this small Madonna around 1496 to 1499, soon after his first trip to Venice; the Italian influence is clear. On the back is the coat of arms of the Haller family of Nuremberg and a painting of Lot fleeing Sodom. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. We paint it by hand in oil after you order. You see a photo of the finished canvas and say yes before it is sent.

The hand behind it
Albrecht Dürer
Dürer treated printmaking as seriously as painting and made it pay. The woodcuts and engravings travelled across Europe in a way panel paintings never could, and he understood the commercial value of a recognisable monogram well before anyone used the word branding. The technical standard is extraordinary. Melencolia I and Knight, Death and the Devil pack dense symbolism into surfaces built entirely from engraved line. The watercolour studies, a hare, a clump of turf, a young bird’s wing, were made for himself and look startlingly modern. Two trips to Italy exposed him to Renaissance proportion theory, which he then wrote about at length in German. The self portraits are the other thing people remember: at twenty two, at twenty six, and at twenty eight, this last arranged frontally in a manner normally reserved for images of Christ.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Haller Madonna in a different size or shape?
Yes. Haller Madonna is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 52.4 x 42.2 cm (20.6 x 16.6 in).
