The painting
Head of Medusa
Rubens painted the severed head of Medusa around 1617 to 1618, lying on a rock, eyes open, the snakes of her hair still writhing and biting each other. Small lizards and a spider crawl out of the blood. It is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.Your copy starts on a blank canvas after you order and is painted in oil by hand. You approve it from a photo before it leaves us.

The hand behind it
Peter Paul Rubens
Rubens ran a workshop the size of a small factory and was also a working diplomat, fluent in several languages, trusted with negotiations between Spain and England. Painting was one part of a very busy life, which makes the volume of output harder to explain rather than easier. The pictures move. Bodies twist, fabric flies, light catches flesh in warm reds and creams. Eight years in Italy studying Titian and antiquity gave him the foundation, and he never stopped copying older painters to learn from them. The workshop system means authorship varies. He would paint the sketch and the key passages, assistants including a young Van Dyck did the rest, and prices reflected how much was his hand. The late landscapes and the paintings of his second wife Hélène Fourment, made for himself rather than for clients, are looser and more personal than anything commissioned.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Head of Medusa in a different size or shape?
Yes. Head of Medusa is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 68.5 x 118 cm (27 x 46.5 in).
