The painting
The Snake Charmer
Rousseau painted this in 1907 for the mother of the painter Robert Delaunay. A dark figure with shining eyes plays a flute at the edge of a jungle river under the moon, and snakes slide out of the trees towards her. It is in the Musée d'Orsay. We paint it by hand in oil after you order. You see a photo of the finished canvas and say yes before it is sent.

The hand behind it
Henri Rousseau
Henri Rousseau worked as a toll collector on the edge of Paris, which is where the nickname Le Douanier comes from, and painted in his spare time without any training at all. The Salon critics were merciless. Younger painters were not. His jungles were painted from the Paris botanical gardens, taxidermy displays and illustrated books. He never left France, whatever he occasionally implied. The leaves are stacked in flat overlapping layers, each one drawn separately, and the effect is stranger than any observed jungle would be. Picasso bought one of his canvases from a junk shop and threw a banquet in his honour in 1908, part tribute and part joke, though the admiration was real. The Sleeping Gypsy and The Dream are the best known works. He died in 1910, still largely unsold, shortly before the avant garde decided he had been right.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Snake Charmer in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Snake Charmer is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 167 x 189 cm (65.7 x 74.4 in).
