The hand behind it
Peder Severin Krøyer
Peder Severin Krøyer is the best known of the Skagen Painters, the artists who gathered at a fishing village on the northern tip of Denmark. He is loved for his long summer evening light, the soft blue hour when sea and sky melt together, and for lively scenes of fishermen and artists at table. Born in Stavanger, Norway, he grew up in Copenhagen and entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at twelve. He later studied in Paris under Léon Bonnat, and from 1882 spent his summers in Skagen with Michael and Anna Ancher and their circle. His best known works include Summer Evening on Skagen’s Southern Beach (1893) and the Artists’ Luncheon at Skagen. His major paintings are in the Skagens Museum and the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen. Our list includes his portrait of Anna Ancher, his friend and fellow Skagen painter.
