The hand behind it
Gustav Dore
Gustave Doré is known above all as an illustrator. His engravings for the Bible, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Don Quixote and London: A Pilgrimage are dramatic and crowded, with deep shadows and huge, rolling landscapes. He also painted, and his oils share that sense of vast scale and dark atmosphere. He was born in Strasbourg in 1832 and was producing published drawings in his teens. He made more than ten thousand illustrations in his lifetime. He was hugely popular in Britain, and a Doré Gallery opened on New Bond Street in London to show his work. A trip to Scotland in 1873 inspired a series of highland landscapes, with misty lochs, mountains and castles. A Souvenir from Scotland and Castle on the Isle of Skye come from that Scottish experience. Look for the brooding skies and the way light breaks through clouds onto water. He died in Paris in 1883.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Paolo and Francesca da Rimini in a different size or shape?
