The painting
Phryne before the Areopagus
Phryne, a courtesan in ancient Athens, was on trial for impiety. According to the story, her lawyer pulled away her robe in front of the judges, and they acquitted her. Gérôme painted the moment in 1861: she hides her face with her arm, and the old men in red lean forward or fall back in shock. It is in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. We paint it by hand in oil after you order. You see a photo of the finished canvas and say yes before it is sent.

The hand behind it
Jean-Léon Gérôme
Jean-Léon Gérôme made paintings that look like photographs of events that never happened. His Orientalist scenes, slave markets, mosque interiors, snake charmers, are built on sketches and objects gathered during travels in Egypt and Turkey, then assembled in a Paris studio into something far more composed than anything he saw. The finish is enamel smooth and the detail relentless. Pollice Verso, with its gladiator standing over a fallen opponent while the crowd gestures downward, invented much of how we picture the Roman arena, and fed directly into twentieth century cinema. He taught for decades at the École des Beaux-Arts and fought the Impressionists hard, calling their 1900 exhibition a disgrace to French art. He was also a serious sculptor in his later years, working in marble, bronze and tinted materials. Edward Said’s critics have made his Orientalist subjects contested ground, and the paintings are now read as much for what they reveal about French attitudes as for their craft.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Phryne before the Areopagus in a different size or shape?
Yes. Phryne before the Areopagus is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 80 x 128 cm (31.5 x 50.4 in).
