The painting
Portrait of a Young Girl
This tiny panel, about 29 cm tall, was painted in Bruges around 1470. Nobody knows who the girl is. She wears a tall black hat and a gold necklace, and she looks sideways out of the picture with a slightly wary expression. Christus put her in a real space, in front of a panelled wall, rather than on the flat dark ground most painters used then. It is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.Painted to order, by hand, in oil on canvas. A photo of your painting comes to you for approval before shipping.

The hand behind it
Petrus Christus
Petrus Christus was the leading painter in Bruges between Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. His pictures have the precise detail of Van Eyck, but he was more interested in space, and he was among the first in the North to use linear perspective with a single vanishing point. He was born in Baarle, between Antwerp and Breda, around 1410 and bought citizenship of Bruges in 1444. He may have taken over Van Eyck’s workshop after 1441, though scholars now see him as an independent painter who also learned from Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden. Many of his clients were Italians living in Bruges. About thirty works are securely his. His Portrait of a Carthusian is in the Metropolitan Museum, his Portrait of a Young Girl is in Berlin, and Our Lady of the Dry Tree is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. He died around 1475. In Portrait of a Carthusian, look for the painted fly on the frame, a trick to show off his skill.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Portrait of a Young Girl in a different size or shape?
