Eleanor of Toledo, the Spanish wife of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, sits stiff and pale with her hand on her young son's shoulder, in the mid-1540s. The real subject is her dress: white satin woven with a black and gold pattern of pomegranates, painted thread by thread. Behind her, the sky is a flat, deep blue. Dust it, do not clean it. A dry, soft brush once or twice a year. No water, no sprays, no cleaning products.

Avoid damp and heat. Not above a radiator, not in a bathroom. Canvas expands and contracts with humidity.
