The painting
Rudolf II as Vertumnus
Arcimboldo painted the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II around 1590 as Vertumnus, the Roman god of the seasons, entirely out of fruit, vegetables and flowers: a pear for a nose, cherries for eyes, a pumpkin forehead, an ear of corn for an ear. The emperor was delighted. Swedish troops took it from Prague in 1648, and it is at Skokloster Castle in Sweden. We paint each copy by hand in oil, only after it is ordered, and send you a photo to approve first.

The hand behind it
Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Giuseppe Arcimboldo painted heads built entirely from things: fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, books. From a distance you see a face in profile, close up you see a pear for a nose or a fish for a cheek. His series of the Four Seasons and the Four Elements are the best-known examples. He was born in Milan in 1527, the son of a painter, and began by designing stained glass and frescoes for Milan Cathedral. In 1562 he went to Vienna as court portraitist to Emperor Ferdinand I and went on serving Maximilian II and Rudolf II in Prague, also designing costumes and festivals. His Vertumnus, a portrait of Rudolf II as the Roman god of the seasons, is his most famous work. He returned to Milan and died there in 1593. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Louvre hold key paintings. In Autumn or Air, try counting the separate objects. The fun is finding how many there are.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
