Sunset at Montmajour
Late sun pours yellow light over a stony heath of small twisted oaks, with the ruins of Montmajour Abbey on the hill behind. Van Gogh described the scene to Theo the next day, calling the light a shower of gold, and that letter helped prove the canvas genuine. A Norwegian industrialist bought it in 1908; by his family's account he put it in his attic after a guest, the French ambassador to Sweden, said it was probably not a van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum confirmed it in 2013.Van Gogh painted this hillside near Arles on 4 July 1888, with oak trees and scrub catching the last yellow light and the ruins of Montmajour abbey on the horizon. For most of the twentieth century it was thought not to be his and spent decades in a Norwegian attic. The Van Gogh Museum confirmed it in 2013, using his letters and the paint itself, the first full-size canvas added to his work since 1928. The original is in a private collection. We paint each copy by hand in oil, only after it is ordered, and send you a photo to approve first.

The hand behind it
Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh came to painting late and worked at it for barely a decade. Before that he sold prints for a Paris art dealer, taught briefly in England, and spent a miserable stretch as a lay preacher among Belgian coal miners, sleeping on straw and giving away his clothes. He was twenty-seven when he decided to draw for a living. The early Dutch work is dark and heavy, all peat browns and lamp-black. The Potato Eaters, finished in Nuenen in 1885, is the high point of that phase and looks almost nothing like what came after. Two years in Paris with his brother Theo changed the palette completely. He saw Impressionist canvases and Japanese prints, and the mud lifted. Arles is where the paintings most people picture were made: the sunflowers, the yellow house, the wheatfields under a sky that will not sit still. Then Saint-Rémy, then Auvers, then nothing. He was thirty-seven. Roughly 860 oil paintings survive. The ones most people know were made in his last two and a half years. He sold almost none of them.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
