The painting
Tarquin and Lucretia
Titian painted this for Philip II of Spain around 1571, in his eighties. Tarquin, in red, raises a dagger over Lucretia on her bed; she pushes him back, and a servant peers through the curtain. The brushwork is loose and thick. It is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.Ours is painted by hand in oil once you order, in the size you choose, and you approve a photo of it before it ships.

The hand behind it
Titian
Titian ran the most successful painting business in sixteenth century Europe and lived long enough to change style completely twice. The early work is clear, bright and sharply drawn. The late work is built from broken, dragged paint that barely resolves close up, and he is said to have finished pictures with his fingers. Charles V and Philip II of Spain both employed him, and the mythological paintings made for Philip, the poesie, took Ovid as a starting point and did what they liked with him. Diana and Actaeon is the high point. He painted in Venice for roughly seventy years, absorbed Giorgione early, then absorbed everything else. Rubens, Velazquez and Rembrandt all studied him closely. The very late Pietà, left unfinished at his death during the plague of 1576, is nearly monochrome and looks two centuries ahead of itself.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Tarquin and Lucretia in a different size or shape?
Yes. Tarquin and Lucretia is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 188.9 x 145.1 cm (74.4 x 57.1 in).
