The Art of Painting
Orange stockings and a black garment slashed to show the shirt beneath: the painter at the easel is dressed expensively, and on his canvas is the sketch of a crown. His model, in blue with downcast eyes, wears laurel and holds a trumpet, and is presumed to be Fama, Pictura or Clio, the Muse of History. Behind her hangs Visscher's map of the Netherlands, creased between north and south. Vermeer never sold it, even in debt, and until 1860 it passed as a Pieter de Hooch. The Art of Painting is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of Johannes Vermeer's work. Each piece is made to order, with full customization of size and framing to suit your space. Every reproduction is backed by our 90-day satisfaction guarantee, with free worldwide shipping.

The hand behind it
Johannes Vermeer
Around thirty-four paintings by Vermeer are known. That is the entire surviving output of a working life, and it tells you most of what you need to know about how he painted. He spent his whole career in Delft, ran an art dealing business inherited from his father, headed the painters’ guild twice, and had eleven surviving children. The pictures were made slowly in a room he used repeatedly, with the same window, the same chairs, the same map on the wall. What he did with light in that room has never really been explained. There is a long argument about whether he used a camera obscura, and it remains an argument. The French invasion of 1672 destroyed the Dutch art market and he died three years later leaving his widow in serious debt. He was then more or less forgotten for two centuries, until a French critic began reattributing his work in the 1860s.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Art of Painting in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Art of Painting is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 120 x 100 cm (47.2 x 39.4 in).
