The painting
The Barque of Dante
This was Delacroix's first big painting at the Paris Salon, in 1822, when he was 24. Dante and Virgil cross a burning lake in Hell while the damned cling to the boat and bite at its sides. Look at the water drops on the wet bodies: each one is a small streak of pure green, yellow and red, set side by side. The French state bought it, and it is now in the Louvre.Ours is painted by hand in oil once you order, in the size you choose, and you approve a photo of it before it ships.

The hand behind it
Eugène Delacroix
Delacroix argued for colour the way other painters argued for drawing, and the fight defined French painting for fifty years. Ingres led the opposition. Delacroix put complementary colours side by side so they intensified each other, a method the Impressionists took straight from him. Liberty Leading the People, painted in 1830, is the picture everyone knows, though it was kept out of public view for years afterwards because the government found it inflammatory. Morocco in 1832 changed his palette permanently. He filled notebooks with watercolours of horses, streets and light, and drew on them for the rest of his career. His journals, kept over decades, are among the best things ever written by a painter about painting. The Saint-Sulpice murals, finished shortly before his death in 1863, are where Van Gogh and Cézanne both went to look.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Barque of Dante in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Barque of Dante is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 189 x 241.5 cm (74.4 x 95.1 in).
