The Birth of Venus
Venus rides a scallop shell drawn by a dolphin, both arms raised to arrange her long brown hair as her body sways in an S-curve. Fifteen putti, Cupid and Psyche among them, gather with nymphs and centaurs, and two centaurs blow shells to announce her. This is not her birth but her journey, fully grown, from the sea to Paphos in Cyprus. Up in the clouds at the upper left is a shadow that looks like the painter himself, fist raised as if holding a brush.Bouguereau showed this Venus at the Paris Salon of 1879. She stands on a scallop shell with both arms raised to her hair, ringed by nymphs, tritons and dolphins, while a circle of cupids turns in the sky above. The finish is as smooth as porcelain, with no visible brushstroke, which is exactly what the Salon public admired and what the Impressionists were reacting against. The original, three metres tall, hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.Painted to order, by hand, in oil on canvas. A photo of your painting comes to you for approval before shipping.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Birth of Venus in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Birth of Venus is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 300 x 218 cm (118.1 x 85.8 in).
