The hand behind it
Philippe de Champaigne
Philippe de Champaigne painted portraits and religious works with a sober, dignified clarity. His sitters are calm and serious, and his colour is cool and exact. He painted Cardinal Richelieu eleven times and was said to be the only artist allowed to show him in full cardinal’s robes. He was born in Brussels in 1602, trained there under the landscape painter Jacques Fouquier and moved to Paris in 1621. He became painter to the Queen Mother in 1628, took French nationality and was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648. He decorated churches and the Sorbonne dome for Richelieu. In later life he was close to the austere Jansenists of Port-Royal, and his style grew even plainer. His Ex-Voto of 1662, showing his daughter’s recovery from illness, is in the Louvre. He died in Paris in 1674. In his Cardinal Richelieu, look at the sweep of red silk against the cool background.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Dead Christ in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Dead Christ is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 68 x 197 cm (26.8 x 77.6 in).
