The painting
The Gallant Conversation
Ter Borch painted this around 1654. A young woman in a shimmering white satin dress stands with her back to us, while a seated officer raises his hand towards her and an older woman drinks. Goethe thought it showed a father's warning; it is now thought to be a scene in a brothel. It is in the Rijksmuseum.Hand-painted in oil to your size once you order, with a photo to approve before it ships.

The hand behind it
Gerard ter Borch
Gerard ter Borch painted the quiet drama of Dutch domestic life: a woman reading a letter, a suitor’s visit, a musical gathering, a young woman in a shimmering satin gown seen from behind. Few painters have rendered satin so well. His scenes are small, restrained and full of unspoken tension, and they influenced Vermeer. Born in Zwolle in 1617, he trained in Amsterdam and Haarlem and travelled widely as a young man, to London, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, and was knighted by Philip IV in Madrid. In 1648 he painted The Ratification of the Treaty of Münster, a small group portrait on copper of the diplomats who ended the Dutch war with Spain. He settled in Deventer, where he served on the town council until his death in 1681. His Gallant Conversation is in the Rijksmuseum. A Boy Ridding His Dog of Fleas is a fine example of his gift for small, ordinary moments.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Gallant Conversation in a different size or shape?
