The Madonna in the Church
This panel is tiny, about 31 cm tall. Jan van Eyck painted it in the late 1430s. Mary stands in the nave of a Gothic church, holding the Child, so large that her crown nearly touches the arches. Sunlight comes through the windows and falls in two patches on the floor. In the choir behind her, two small angels sing. It is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.Your copy starts on a blank canvas after you order and is painted in oil by hand. You approve it from a photo before it leaves us.

The hand behind it
Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck painted detail at a scale that still seems impossible: individual hairs, reflections inside a convex mirror, threads in a carpet, all in panels you can cover with both hands. Oil paint, which he did not invent but handled better than anyone before him, made the layering possible. The Arnolfini Portrait crams a signature onto the back wall, Jan van Eyck was here, above a mirror reflecting two extra figures standing where the viewer stands. Scholars have spent a century arguing about what the picture is actually recording. The Ghent Altarpiece, worked on with his brother Hubert, is the larger achievement and has survived theft, fire, war and one panel still missing since 1934. He worked as court painter to Philip the Good of Burgundy, including diplomatic travel, and was paid well enough to suggest his employer knew what he had.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
