The painting
The Raft of the Medusa
Fifteen survivors, thirteen days adrift, catch sight of a ship on the horizon, and from a base of dead and dying men the living surge upward toward it. At the peak, the crew member Jean Charles stands on an empty barrel waving a dark red handkerchief; a Haitian model named Joseph posed for him. Delacroix sat for the foreground figure whose face is turned down and one arm stretched out. Bitumen in the palette has since darkened and wrinkled, so whole areas of detail are now hard to read. The Raft of the Medusa is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of Théodore Géricault's work. Each piece is made to order, with full customization of size and framing to suit your space. Every reproduction is backed by our 90-day satisfaction guarantee, with free worldwide shipping.

The hand behind it
Théodore Géricault
Théodore Géricault painted with raw energy: rearing horses, soldiers, shipwreck survivors and faces studied from life with unflinching honesty. He was one of the founders of French Romanticism and broke with the cool calm of the Neoclassical school. He was born in Rouen in 1791 and trained with Carle Vernet and Pierre Guérin, while teaching himself by copying Rubens and Rembrandt in the Louvre. His huge Raft of the Medusa (1819), about a recent French shipwreck, is in the Louvre, as is The Derby at Epsom (1821), with its horses stretched out in full flight. He also painted a famous series of portraits of psychiatric patients. He died in Paris in 1824, aged 32. The Derby at Epsom shows his lifelong love of horses and movement.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Raft of the Medusa in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Raft of the Medusa is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 491 x 716 cm (193.3 x 281.9 in).
