They Did Not Expect Him
A man in a worn coat has just walked into his family's sitting room, back from political exile, and nobody is ready. His mother rises from her chair. His wife, at the piano, turns. The boy looks delighted, the girl unsure. The maid who let him in still holds the door. Repin worked on it from 1884 to 1888. It is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. We paint each copy by hand in oil, only after it is ordered, and send you a photo to approve first.

The hand behind it
Ilya Repin
Ilya Repin painted Russia arguing with itself. Barge Haulers on the Volga, finished when he was twenty nine, shows eleven men roped to a boat, each face individual, and it made his reputation as much for its politics as its handling. He trained at the St Petersburg academy and joined the Peredvizhniki, who took exhibitions to provincial cities rather than waiting for audiences to come to them. The historical paintings, particularly Ivan the Terrible with the son he has just killed, were considered so disturbing that the Tsar banned public display of that one. He painted almost everyone worth painting in Russian culture: Tolstoy repeatedly, Mussorgsky days before his death, Rimsky-Korsakov. After 1917 his home at Kuokkala fell inside newly independent Finland, and he stayed there, declining Soviet invitations to return.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get They Did Not Expect Him in a different size or shape?
