Minerva Expelling the Vices from the Garden of Virtue
Mantegna painted this for Isabella d'Este's study in Mantua, finished in 1502. Minerva charges into a garden and drives out the Vices, grotesque figures fleeing into a pond, while three Virtues look down from a cloud. A tree on the left has a human shape. It is in the Louvre.Your copy starts on a blank canvas after you order and is painted in oil by hand. You approve it from a photo before it leaves us.

The hand behind it
Andrea Mantegna
Mantegna was obsessed with Roman antiquity and with perspective, and pushed both harder than was comfortable. The Lamentation over the Dead Christ shows the body feet first in extreme foreshortening, an arrangement that still looks aggressive. He worked for the Gonzaga family in Mantua for nearly fifty years. The Camera degli Sposi, painted for their private chamber, opens the ceiling into a painted oculus with figures and a peacock looking down into the room, the first illusion of its kind. The figures are sculptural to the point of looking carved, with drapery like folded metal and stone architecture everywhere. He collected Roman fragments, studied inscriptions, and made engravings that spread the style north. Bellini was his brother in law, and the influence ran both ways.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
