The painting
When Will You Marry? (Nafea Faa Ipoipo)
In front, a young Tahitian woman in traditional dress wears a white tiare flower behind her ear, which may mean she is looking for a husband. Behind her another woman sits upright in a high-necked pink Western dress, making a gesture one scholar reads as a warning. The Tahitian title is painted in the lower right corner. At his 1893 Durand-Ruel exhibition Gauguin asked 1,500 francs for it, his top price, and nobody bought it.Gauguin painted this in Tahiti in 1892 and gave it the Tahitian title Nafea Faa Ipoipo. Two young women sit in a landscape of yellow, green and blue: the one in front in a traditional pareo, the one behind her in a high-necked dress of the kind missionaries introduced. Gauguin set the flat, bright colour areas side by side with dark outlines, the way stained glass is built. The original measures about 101 x 77 cm.Ours is painted by hand in oil once you order, in the size you choose, and you approve a photo of it before it ships.

The hand behind it
Paul Gauguin
Gauguin left a career in stockbroking, then left his family, then left Europe, and built a body of work out of the going. The Tahitian paintings are the ones that sell reproductions, and they are also the ones now argued over hardest, given what his letters and behaviour there record. The painting itself broke with Impressionism deliberately. Flat areas of unmodulated colour, heavy outlines, space compressed. He called it synthetism, worked it out at Pont-Aven in Brittany, and pushed it further once he reached the Pacific. The stay with Van Gogh in Arles lasted nine weeks and ended with the razor and the ear. He spent his final years in the Marquesas, in poor health and in trouble with the colonial authorities. Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, painted in 1897, was intended as a summary before an attempted suicide.

How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
