The painting

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?

Read right to left, the large canvas runs from three crouching women with a sleeping child, past a central figure picking fruit, to an old woman near death on the left. At her feet is a strange white bird, which Gauguin said meant the futility of words, and a blue idol behind stands for what he called the Beyond. He wrote the title without question marks in the upper left corner. He painted it in Tahiti while ill and in debt, after news came of his daughter's death.Gauguin painted this frieze in Tahiti in 1897 and 1898 and called it his testament. It reads from right to left: a sleeping infant, figures in the middle of life, a man reaching up to pick fruit, and an old woman at the far left close to death. A blue idol stands behind them. Gauguin wrote the title himself in the yellow corner at the top left. The original, nearly four metres wide, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. At our sizes it keeps its long, low shape.Your copy starts on a blank canvas after you order and is painted in oil by hand. You approve it from a photo before it leaves us.

The hand behind it

Paul Gauguin

Gauguin left a career in stockbroking, then left his family, then left Europe, and built a body of work out of the going. The Tahitian paintings are the ones that sell reproductions, and they are also the ones now argued over hardest, given what his letters and behaviour there record. The painting itself broke with Impressionism deliberately. Flat areas of unmodulated colour, heavy outlines, space compressed. He called it synthetism, worked it out at Pont-Aven in Brittany, and pushed it further once he reached the Pacific. The stay with Van Gogh in Arles lasted nine weeks and ended with the razor and the ear. He spent his final years in the Marquesas, in poor health and in trouble with the colonial authorities. Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, painted in 1897, was intended as a summary before an attempted suicide.

Looking after it

Care and hanging

Keep it out of direct sun. Oil paint and varnish yellow and crack under prolonged UV. An interior wall away from a south-facing window is ideal.
Dust it, do not clean it. A dry, soft brush once or twice a year. No water, no sprays, no cleaning products.
Avoid damp and heat. Not above a radiator, not in a bathroom. Canvas expands and contracts with humidity.
Hang it at eye level. The centre of the painting about 145 cm (57 in) from the floor, on two fixings so it sits level.
