Woman in the Garden
Monet painted this in 1867 in the garden of his aunt's house at Sainte-Adresse, on the Normandy coast. A woman in a white dress, holding a parasol, stands on the lawn by a bed of red geraniums, with the trees behind casting deep shade. It is in the Hermitage in St Petersburg. We paint it by hand in oil after you order. You see a photo of the finished canvas and say yes before it is sent.

The hand behind it
Claude Monet
Monet grew up in Le Havre selling caricatures of local worthies for pocket money. Eugène Boudin talked him into painting outdoors, which at the time was an awkward, slightly eccentric thing to do, and he never really came back inside. One canvas gave the movement its name. Impression, Sunrise was hung in the 1874 independent exhibition and a critic used the title as an insult. It stuck, and the painters adopted it. The serial work came later and is the part that still looks radical. Haystacks, poplars, the façade of Rouen cathedral, the Thames under fog, all painted over and over at different hours. The subject was never the point. The light falling on it was. He bought the house at Giverny in 1890, built the water garden, and spent his last three decades painting it. Cataracts wrecked his colour judgement in the 1910s and the late water lilies were made half blind, then partly repainted after surgery. He died there in 1926.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Woman in the Garden in a different size or shape?
