Adam Frans van der Meulen

Adam Frans van der Meulen painted the wars of Louis XIV. His pictures show armies on the march, sieges seen from a hilltop and cavalry clashes, set in wide, carefully observed landscapes with the king and his officers often in the foreground. He also painted hunts and equestrian portraits.
He was born in Brussels and trained with the battle painter Peter Snayers. In 1664 he moved to Paris to work for Louis XIV under Charles Le Brun at the Gobelins, designing tapestry cartoons for the series The History of the King. He followed the king on campaign to sketch the ground and the fortresses, which is why his views are so exact. He was made painter to the king in 1673 and painted The King’s Conquests for the royal pavilion at Marly.
Versions of his Crossing of the Rhine hang in the Louvre and the Rijksmuseum.
