Allaert van Everdingen

Allaert van Everdingen

Allaert van Everdingen introduced Scandinavian scenery to Dutch painting: rushing waterfalls, pine covered slopes, log cabins and rocky rivers, painted in strong browns and greens. He also painted stormy seascapes.

He was baptised in Alkmaar in 1621, studied with Roelant Savery in Utrecht and Pieter de Molijn in Haarlem. In the 1640s he travelled to Norway and Sweden, and the landscapes he saw there shaped the rest of his career. His waterfall pictures influenced Jacob van Ruisdael. He was also a printmaker and made etchings. He settled in Amsterdam, where he died in 1675. His work is in the Hermitage, the Alte Pinakothek and the National Gallery of Denmark.

Scandinavian Landscape and Forest Scene with Water Mill show his wild, northern subjects.
