About Dutch Landscape Paintings
In a flat country the sky often takes up most of the picture. Jacob van Ruisdael's "The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede" (about 1670) sets a mill against heavy clouds. Meindert Hobbema painted a straight road lined with tall trees in "The Avenue at Middelharnis" (1689), now in the National Gallery in London. Aelbert Cuyp bathed cattle and rivers in golden light, and Jan van Goyen painted rivers in soft browns and greys.
In the 19th century the Hague School painters, such as Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, painted the same polders and dunes.
