About Flemish Village and Peasant Scenes
Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted village life with humour and close observation. "The Hunters in the Snow" (1565) shows tired hunters above a valley of skaters, and "The Peasant Wedding" shows a crowded barn feast. Both are in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. "Netherlandish Proverbs" (1559) packs more than a hundred sayings into one village.
In the next century David Teniers the Younger painted village fairs and taverns.
