About Old Master Flower Paintings
Around 1600 painters in Antwerp and Middelburg made the flower bouquet a subject of its own. Jan Brueghel the Elder and Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder painted flowers that bloom at different times of year in one vase, working from separate studies. Tulips were luxury goods then, and they appear in many of these works.
In the following century Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum painted looser, fuller arrangements with insects and dewdrops.
