Balthasar van der Ast

Balthasar van der Ast painted still lifes of flowers, fruit and shells, often with insects and lizards crawling among them. Every petal and shell is painted with jewel-like precision, and he was one of the first painters to make shells a subject in their own right.

He was born in Middelburg in 1593 or 1594 and after his father’s death trained with his brother-in-law, the flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder. He moved with the Bosschaert family to Bergen op Zoom and Utrecht, where he joined the painters’ guild in 1619, and later settled in Delft, where he died in 1657. Jan Davidsz de Heem was among his pupils. His paintings hang in the Mauritshuis, the National Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

In A Basket of Flowers with Shells on a Ledge, look for the small creatures. There is usually a butterfly or lizard hiding somewhere.
