Caesar van Everdingen

Caesar van Everdingen

Caesar van Everdingen painted mythology, allegory and portraits in a clear, classical style, with smooth surfaces, pale light and sculptural figures.

He was born in Alkmaar around 1616, trained in Utrecht with Jan van Bronckhorst and joined the Alkmaar painters’ guild in 1632. From 1648 to 1650 he worked on the decoration of the Oranjezaal in Huis ten Bosch for the House of Orange, including Allegory of the Birth of Frederik Hendrik. He later lived in Haarlem and then returned to Alkmaar, where he died in 1678. His brother Allaert was a landscape painter. His Vertumnus and Pomona is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

Amor Holding a Glass Orb shows his cool, polished style.
