Benozzo Gozzoli

Benozzo Gozzoli

Benozzo Gozzoli loved pageantry. His frescoes are full of richly dressed riders, horses, hunting dogs and hilly landscapes, painted with bright colour and a delight in detail that looks back to the late Gothic style.

He was born near Florence around 1421, trained as a goldsmith, worked with Lorenzo Ghiberti on the Baptistery doors and assisted Fra Angelico, including in Rome and Orvieto. His best known work is the Procession of the Magi (1459 to 1461) in the chapel of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, which includes portraits of the Medici family. He also painted the life of Saint Augustine in San Gimignano. He died in Pistoia in 1497.

His Madonna and Child with angels shows his gold, decorative and gentle manner.
