Gentile Bellini
Gentile Bellini was a Venetian painter known for portraits and large views of Venetian life. His processions and ceremonies fill St Mark’s Square and the canals with crowds of people.
The son of Jacopo Bellini and brother of Giovanni, he became official portrait painter to the doges. In 1479 Venice sent him to Constantinople, where he painted Sultan Mehmet II; that portrait is in the National Gallery in London. His Procession in St Mark’s Square and Miracle of the Cross at the Bridge of San Lorenzo are in the Accademia in Venice.
