About Renaissance Madonna Paintings
The Madonna and Child was the most requested subject of Italian Renaissance painting. Filippo Lippi's "Madonna and Child with Two Angels" (about 1460 to 1465) in the Uffizi shows a young mother at a window. His pupil Sandro Botticelli painted the round "Madonna of the Magnificat". Raphael painted many Madonnas, including "Madonna of the Meadow" in Vienna and the "Sistine Madonna" (1512 to 1513) in Dresden, with its two leaning cherubs.
Giovanni Bellini gave Venetian Madonnas soft light and calm landscapes. Round originals are reproduced in a square format.
