About Famous Renaissance Frescoes in Oil
A fresco is painted onto wet plaster, so the originals cannot leave their walls. Michelangelo painted "The Creation of Adam" on the Sistine Chapel ceiling between 1508 and 1512. Leonardo da Vinci painted "The Last Supper" in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan in the 1490s, using an experimental method that began to flake within his lifetime. Raphael painted "The School of Athens" (1509 to 1511) in the Vatican.
These reproductions are painted in oil on canvas, often as a detail such as the two hands of Adam and God.
