Bernhard Gutmann

Bernhard Gutmann painted figures, interiors, still lifes and landscapes in a warm, loose Impressionist style, often with quiet domestic subjects such as mothers and children, tea tables and sunlit rooms.
He was born in Hamburg in 1869 and studied at the academies in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe. He moved to the United States in 1892, worked in Lynchburg, Virginia, and then in New York as an illustrator and printmaker. From 1907 to 1911 he kept a studio in Paris, where his colour brightened, and later he lived in the artists’ community at Silvermine, Connecticut. He died in 1936.
Imari Tea Set and Baby show his gentle, intimate subjects.
