Carroll Beckwith

Carroll Beckwith was an American painter of portraits, figures and landscapes, known for his elegant women and fine drawing. His paintings have a polished, naturalistic style influenced by his training in Paris.
Born in Hannibal, Missouri, he studied in Chicago and New York and then in Paris under Carolus-Duran, where he shared a studio with John Singer Sargent. He taught at the Art Students League in New York and painted murals for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. He painted portraits of Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt.
Look at his portraits for the soft light on the faces and the careful drawing.
