Dirck van Baburen

Dirck van Baburen was one of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, Dutch painters who went to Rome and brought back Caravaggio’s strong light and lifelike figures. His paintings are bold and earthy, with large figures pushed close to the viewer, dramatic shadows and plain, unidealised faces.

Born near Utrecht, he trained with Paulus Moreelse and went to Rome as a young man, where he painted religious works, including an Entombment for the church of San Pietro in Montorio. Back in Utrecht around 1620 he painted musicians, drinkers and mythological scenes. His Procuress of 1622 in Boston appears in the background of two paintings by Vermeer.

The Rijksmuseum has his Prometheus Being Chained by Vulcan. Look at the raking light and the strong, muscular figures pressed up to the front of the picture.
