Fannie Eliza Duvall

Fannie Eliza Duvall painted flowers, gardens and still lifes, as well as scenes of life in southern California. Her pictures are bright and fresh, with loose brushwork and plenty of sunshine.
She was born in Port Byron, New York, in 1861 and studied in New York at the Art Students League and Cooper Union, and later in Paris. She moved to Los Angeles in 1888 and became an active part of the young art community there. She showed Chrysanthemum Garden in Southern California at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
Chrysanthemums and Still Life with Oranges and Marmalade show her feeling for colour and light, and First Communion, San Juan Capistrano records a scene at one of California’s old missions. She died in Los Angeles in 1934.
