Fra Carnevale

Fra Carnevale was a painter and Dominican friar from Urbino whose few surviving works show a love of architecture and perspective. His figures stand in bright, carefully measured spaces, with strong light and deeply folded drapery.
He was born in Urbino around 1420 as Bartolomeo di Giovanni Corradini and worked in Filippo Lippi’s studio in Florence in the mid 1440s. He entered the Dominican order in 1449 and worked as both painter and architect in Urbino, designing the portal of San Domenico there. Only about nine works are securely his. The Barberini Panels, showing the Birth of the Virgin and the Presentation in the Temple, are divided between the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He died in 1484.
Portrait of a Man and Saint John the Baptist are among the few works attributed to him.
