Fritz Zuber-Buhler

Fritz Zuber-Bühler painted gentle scenes of children, young women and mothers, often in pastoral settings, with smooth skin, soft light and clear, pleasing colour. His style belongs to the academic tradition of Bouguereau and Cabanel.

He was born in Le Locle in Switzerland and studied in Paris, first with Louis Grosclaude and then at the École des Beaux-Arts under François-Édouard Picot. He travelled in Italy, then settled in Paris, where he showed at the Salon from 1850 until 1891. He also painted mythological and religious subjects and portraits, and his work sold well in the United States.

The Cherry Thieves and Maternity show his typical charm. Look at the careful modelling of faces and hands.
